What is Leave Policy ?

Leave refers to time off from work for personal or health-related reasons. In Indian payroll systems, companies have specific leave policies that outline the types and number of leaves an employee is entitled to each year. These policies also specify eligibility criteria for employees.

Common types of leaves in Indian leave policies include:

  • Sick Leave/Medical Leave: For employees who are ill or injured.
  • Casual Leave: Short-term leave for personal matters or rest.
  • Maternity Leave: Time off for women before and after childbirth.
  • Paternity Leave: Leave for fathers following the birth of a child.
  • Bereavement Leave: Time off following the death of a family member.
  • Privileged Leave/Earned Leave: Leave earned based on work performance.
  • Birthday Leave: A day off for an employee’s birthday.
  • Anniversary Leave: Leave granted on an employee’s wedding anniversary.
  • Compensatory Leave: Leave granted for extra work hours.
  • Unpaid Leave: Approved absence without pay.
  • Festive Holidays: Time off for religious festivals.
  • Public Holidays: National holidays like Independence Day, Republic Day, and Gandhi Jayanti.

Newer types of leave include menstrual leave for women and quarantine leave for employees affected by health crises like COVID-19.
