What’s different about running HR in Bangalore

Bangalore HR has a few patterns you don’t find in the same combination anywhere else.

The workforce skews younger and more tech-fluent than other Indian cities. Engineers and product folks expect the HR app to work the way Slack and Notion do, not the way a 2010 enterprise tool does. If your HRMS is a friction source, it bleeds into engagement scores fast.

A typical 300-person Bangalore business has its main office on Outer Ring Road or in Whitefield, a smaller team in Koramangala or Indiranagar, and probably one off-site team in HSR Layout or Electronic City. Karnataka also raised its Professional Tax exemption threshold in April 2025. The cutoff went from ₹15,000 to ₹25,000 monthly salary. A lot of payroll software products still have the old slab loaded, which means HR teams are either over-deducting or chasing reconciliation each cycle.

And Bangalore traffic is its own variable. Two-hour commutes between Whitefield and Electronic City made hybrid work permanent here long before COVID. The attendance system has to handle home selfie attendance some days and office geofence other days without HR rebuilding the policy each week.

The exemption threshold went up from ₹15,000 to ₹25,000 effective April 1, 2025. A meaningful chunk of Bangalore’s salaried population is now exempt. EasyHR handles the cutover so you don’t have to chase it.

The annual cap stays at ₹2,500 (₹200 a month for 11 months and ₹300 in February). EasyHR deducts the right amount each month, generates Form 5 and Form 5A returns, and remits before the 20th of the following month. Late-payment interest of 1.25% per month is tracked so finance gets a heads-up before a notice arrives.

Karnataka Shops & Commercial Establishments Act 1961

The attendance and leave engine handles the parts that hit you day to day:

  • A break required after 5 continuous hours
  • One full weekly holiday for every employee
  • 12 days of casual leave per year
  • 12 days of sick leave per year
  • 1 day of earned leave for every 20 days worked

Karnataka also requires earned leave encashment at exit. If an employee leaves with unused EL, you have to pay it out, and failing to do so is a violation. EasyHR tracks balances, applies the encashment formula at separation, and includes it in the final settlement automatically.

Registration under the Act is required within 30 days of starting business. New customers get help with the eKarmika registration and renewal cycle as part of onboarding.
