What’s different about running HR in Chennai

Chennai’s HR workload has a few specific patterns that catch generic HRMS products out.

Tamil Nadu’s Professional Tax regime is half-yearly, not monthly. Greater Chennai Corporation collects PT in two windows per year (April-September, due by 30 September; October-March, due by 31 March). Most HRMS products default to monthly PT deduction and create reconciliation chaos. The right approach is to accrue monthly and remit half-yearly against the GCC slabs.

The IT belt sits along the OMR (Old Mahabalipuram Road, also called the IT Expressway) running south through Sholinganallur, Navalur, and Siruseri. Tidel Park at Taramani and the SIPCOT IT belt at Siruseri hold a meaningful chunk of Chennai’s IT workforce. A typical 250-person Chennai IT company has its main office somewhere along OMR, often a smaller team at Tidel Park, and engineers who commute via company shuttles from across the city.

The auto belt is the second pillar. Sriperumbudur, Oragadam, and Maraimalai Nagar host Hyundai, Renault-Nissan, Ford’s old facility (now Ola Electric), Daimler, plus the tier-one and tier-two suppliers. The HR workload is three-shift, plant-floor biometric, and overtime-heavy. Most generic products don’t handle this well.

Chennai monsoon (October-December) is also serious. WFH spikes during heavy-rain weeks. The attendance system has to handle home selfie attendance for office staff during these weeks while keeping shift-based attendance for the manufacturing belt unchanged.

Tamil Nadu Shops & Establishments Act 1947

The attendance and leave engine handles the parts that hit you day to day:

  • 12 days of casual leave per year
  • 12 days of sick leave per year
  • 1 day of earned leave for every 12 days worked

Does EasyHR handle Tamil Nadu’s half-yearly PT regime? It does. The system accrues PT monthly per employee and remits to Greater Chennai Corporation per the half-yearly schedule (by 30 September and 31 March). The GCC slabs are pre-loaded.
