What is Leave Sharing Scheme ?

A leave donation or leave-sharing scheme allows employees to contribute a portion of their earned leave to colleagues who need additional time off due to emergencies. This time is pooled in a “leave bank,” where workers who have exhausted their paid leave can apply to use the donated time.

The employer sets the eligibility criteria for who can receive donated leave, ensuring fairness and consistency.

Benefits of the Leave Sharing Scheme include:

  • Promoting goodwill among employees and fostering a supportive work culture.
  • Reducing turnover by helping staff members facing personal hardships remain employed.
  • Minimizing absenteeism without negatively affecting the organization’s overall operations.
  • Boosting employee morale, especially in cases where the leave is needed due to health or personal emergencies.

How HR teams use this term

HR teams usually use Leave Sharing Scheme when they write policies, explain employee communication, review payroll or leave records, or keep employee data clean in an HRMS.
